Space ball: UFO shocks Brazilians (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

An unidentified metal sphere has plunged from the sky on unsuspecting villagers in northern Brazil, causing an uproar. According to eyewitnesses, the UFO weighs about 50 kilograms and measures roughly one meter in diameter.

The sphere fell on Wednesday in a village of Riacho dos Poços in Brazilian Maranhão state. No casualties were reported apart from an unfortunate cashew tree that was severed by the object as it plunged to the ground, according to MR Notícias, a Mata Roma news site.

Valdir José Mendes, 46, told police the sphere landed several meters from his house leaving a one-meter-deep hole in the yard.

"I heard the noise and I went out to see what caused it. I thought it was a plane that had fallen, or an earthquake," he said.

The noise was such that Mendes was too scared to go outside. However, curiosity got the better of him and he headed outside to find the cashew tree’s trunk snapped in half by a mysterious metal sphere lying in a hole nearby.

Some 20 villagers joined Mendes to help him extract the object from the ground and examine it. Mendes says the sphere is hollow and if shaken some sort of liquid can be felt swishing inside. Locals quickly spread the news, as they reached the town of Mata Roma over 2,000 people flocked to see the “UFO”.

"It was a huge uproar here. Some feared it was the beginning of the 2012 end of the world, others said it was ‘alien’, but I think it is a piece of satellite," said Max Garreto Mauro, 25, a resident of Mata Roma.

Peter Costa, the meteorologist at the National Institute for Space Research (INPE), agrees with Garetto, saying the object would probably be part of a satellite. "I'm sure this is not a weather balloon or part of it," he said as quoted by O Imparcia.

Military police confiscated the sphere and took it to the barracks in the nearby Mata Roma. They have not specified what the UFO’s possible future will be. In a statement the Air Force Command said it "does not have specialized structures to perform scientific research on this type of aerial phenomena, which prevents the institution to submit an opinion on these events."

Mind your head!

In December 2011, a similar incident happened in Namibia, where a metal “Teletubby head” weighing 5.9 kilograms and measuring 35 centimeters in diameter hit the ground in the village of Omanatunga. Some Russian specialists believe the “head” was part of the third stage of the Soyuz-U rocket, launched on October 30.

Space debris stories made the headlines throughout 2011. In January, media chased the infamous Russian Mars probe Phobos-Grunt across five oceans to keep up with Russia’s space agency, constantly changing the possible impact location.

Earlier in October, the German Roentgen satellite split into 30 chunks, one of which weighed 400 kilograms, but those globs eventually made their way in to the Indian Ocean.

In September 2011, the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite made headlines when it threatened to fall right onto Britain but eventually collapsed into a remote part of the Pacific Ocean.

NASA | Take a "Swift" Tour of the Andromeda Galaxy

In a break from its usual task of searching for distant cosmic explosions, NASA's Swift satellite has acquired the highest-resolution view of a neighboring spiral galaxy ever attained in the ultraviolet. The galaxy, known as M31 in the constellation Andromeda, is the largest and closest spiral galaxy to our own.

"Swift reveals about 20,000 ultraviolet sources in M31, especially hot, young stars and dense star clusters," said Stefan Immler, a research scientist on the Swift team at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. "Of particular importance is that we have covered the galaxy in three ultraviolet filters. That will let us study M31's star-formation processes in much greater detail than previously possible."

Swift Makes Best-ever Ultraviolet Portrait of Andromeda Galaxy

M31, also known as the Andromeda Galaxy, is more than 220,000 light-years across and lies 2.5 million light-years away. On a clear, dark night, the galaxy is faintly visible as a misty patch to the naked eye.

Between May 25 and July 26, 2008, Swift's Ultraviolet/Optical Telescope (UVOT) acquired 330 images of M31 at wavelengths of 192.8, 224.6, and 260 nanometers. The images represent a total exposure time of 24 hours.

The task of assembling the resulting 85 gigabytes of images fell to Erin Grand, an undergraduate student at the University of Maryland at College Park who worked with Immler as an intern this summer. "After ten weeks of processing that immense amount of data, I'm extremely proud of this new view of M31," she said.

Several features are immediately apparent in the new mosaic. The first is the striking difference between the galaxy's central bulge and its spiral arms. "The bulge is smoother and redder because it's full of older and cooler stars," Immler explained. "Very few new stars form here because most of the materials needed to make them have been depleted."

Dense clusters of hot, young, blue stars sparkle beyond the central bulge. As in our own galaxy, M31's disk and spiral arms contain most of the gas and dust needed to produce new generations of stars. Star clusters are especially plentiful in an enormous ring about 150,000 light-years across.

What triggers the unusually intense star formation in Andromeda's "ring of fire"? Previous studies have shown that tides raised by the many small satellite galaxies in orbit around M31 help boost the interactions within gas clouds that result in new stars.

In 1885, an exploding star in M31's central bulge became bright enough to see with the naked eye. This was the first supernova ever recorded in any galaxy beyond our own Milky Way. "We expect an average of about one supernova per century in galaxies like M31," Immler said. "Perhaps we won't have to wait too long for another one."

"Swift is surveying nearby galaxies like M31 so astronomers can better understand star- formation conditions and relate them to conditions in the distant galaxies where we see gamma-ray bursts occurring," said Neil Gehrels, the mission's principal investigator at NASA Goddard. Since Swift's November 2005 launch, the satellite has detected more than 400 gamma-ray bursts -- massive, far-off explosions likely associated with the births of black holes.

Swift is managed by NASA Goddard. It was built and is being operated in collaboration with Pennsylvania State University, the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, and General Dynamics of Gilbert, Ariz., in the United States. International collaborators include the University of Leicester and Mullard Space Sciences Laboratory in the United Kingdom, Brera Observatory and the Italian Space Agency in Italy, and additional partners in Germany and Japan.

NASA Finds Millions of Tons of Water Ice in Lunar Craters

Vast pockets of water ice numbering in the millions of tons have been discovered at the north pole of the moon, opening up another region of the lunar surface for potential exploration by astronauts and unmanned probes, NASA announced Monday.

A NASA radar instrument on an Indian moon probe found evidence of at least 600 million metric tons of water ice spread out on the bottom of craters at the lunar north pole. It is yet another supply of lunar water ice, a vital resource that could be mined to produce oxygen or rocket fuel to support a future moon base, NASA officials said.

More than 40 craters ranging from 1 mile (2 km) to 9 miles (15 km) wide were found harboring the water ice, which was detected using NASA?s Mini-SAR radar instrument on India?s Chandrayaan-1 lunar orbiter. The instrument is also known as Mini-RF in NASA parlance.

"After analyzing the data, our science team determined a strong indication of water ice, a finding which will give future missions a new target to further explore and exploit," said Jason Crusan, program executive for the Mini-RF Program for NASA's space operations program in Washington, D.C., in a statement.

Water, water everywhere

The ice was discovered in permanently shadowed craters at the moon?s north pole. Similar conditions of perpetual night exist at the moon?s south pole as well, where water ice was also confirmed to be present last year. Because these regions never see sunlight, water can stay in its frozen form indefinitely.

Last September, NASA and other scientists confirmed without a doubt the existence of water ice at the moon?s south pole, as well as signals of water molecules across large areas of the lunar surface. Several spacecraft, including India?s Chandrayaan-1 probe that carried the radar instrument used for the new findings, found hard evidence of water on the moon.

In October, NASA crashed two impactor probes into the lunar south pole in an attempt to kick up clouds of water ice and measure it from an orbiting spacecraft and other space and ground-based observatories. The subsequent analysis turned up significant amounts of waterand water vapor in the debris cloud, NASA scientists said.

"The emerging picture from the multiple measurements and resulting data of the instruments on lunar missions indicates that water creation, migration, deposition and retention are occurring on the moon," said Paul Spudis, principal investigator of the Mini-SAR experiment at the Lunar and Planetary Institute in Houston, in a statement. "The new discoveries show the moon is an even more interesting and attractive scientific, exploration and operational destination than people had previously thought."

The research will be detailed in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.

Will astronauts go?

Water ice is a tantalizing find anywhere on the moon because it can serve as a natural resource for astronauts on future lunar landing missions. The ice could be melted into drinking water or be separated into its component oxygen and hydrogen to provide breathing air and rocket fuel, NASA officials have said in the past.
NASA had planned to send astronauts on new lunar landing missions by 2020 as part of its Constellation program. The program was building the new Altair moon landers, as well as the Orion spacecraft and Ares rockets needed to launch ferry them to lunar surface, but experts said it was extremely underfunded and behind schedule.

Last month, President Barack Obama ordered NASA to cancel the Constellation program and focus on using commercial spacecraft to launch American astronauts to orbit instead. The move is aimed at freeing up NASA to concentrate on more lofty exploration missions, such as returning to the moon or sending astronauts to visit an asteroid, stable regions in space called Lagrange points or the moons of Mars.

NASA chief Charles Bolden told members of the U.S. Senate and Congress last week that Mars is expected to be the ultimate destination for astronauts. But the moon, he said, is still a good interim target to serve as a stepping stone for more distant space exploration goals.

Chandrayaan-1?s Mini-SAR radar was one of two instruments involving NASA on India?s Chandrayan-1 spacecraft. The probe also carried the Moon Mineralogy Mapper for NASA. A version of Mini-SAR, called Mini-RF, is riding on NASA?s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter.

India launched Chandrayaan-1 probe in October 2008 and carried 11 instruments to observe the moon from lunar orbit. It was India?s first moon probe and carried an impactor probe that it unleashed in November 2008. The spacecraft went offline in late August 2009 after an abrupt malfunction cut off communications with Earth.
India is planning a successor to Chandrayaan-1, dubbed Chandrayaan-2. The name Chandrayaan means ?moon craft? in Sanskrit.

The new Chandrayaan-2 mission is slated to launch in 2013, according to Indian news reports.

One of the most disquieting aspects of the Georgia Guidestones is the very first of the ‘commandments’: “Maintain humanity under 500,000,000 in perpetual balance with nature.” The concept of population control is not exclusive to the Guidestones, especially insofar as drawing a correlation with a balance with nature, but the 500 million is 1/16th of the present population that would have to… die.

Most commonly, this topic pertains to controlling future births, including debates about the use of contraceptives vis-a-vis Catholicism or government intervention, such as China’s one-child policy. But what option is there to reduce a population if it is seen as 7.5 billion people more than desired? And if so many people are to die, could it be a gradual process or would it necessarily have to be a single, sudden method?

The commandments on the GA Guidestones are then advice not for those of us who currently see them, but those left after some cataclysmic event, since it is only once the population is below 500 million that anyone can ‘maintain’ the population of that size. Population levels were already approximately 4 billion in 1975 – over 5 years before the center cluster of the Guidestones were erected. The use of the word maintain clearly conveys that this message is not for those alive before a cataclysmic event.

Van Smith offers an interesting link between cataclysmic events, astronomy and structures such as the Guidestones:
Supposedly, B.F. Coggins, an extremely wealthy and powerful granite and real estate magnate in Elberton, Georgia, has in his company’s possession a Rosicrucian document describing the Georgia Guidestones monument as some sort of portal. The document admits that the monument contains hidden messages, but that only the enlightened will understand them. Moreover, the monument was designed for an activation event that will indicate the immediate threat of a global catastrophe so horrific that humanity will come close to losing all hope. The document reassures the survivors that they are
loved and will be cared for. The tenor is such to evoke the impression that intercession will occur either supernaturally or by space aliens.

[…]I deeply doubt the veracity of these claims, but if there is any possibility that they are true, the “activation event” can only mean that Polaris, the North Star, will drift out of the sighting hole drilled into the Gnomen stone. When I was last at the Guidestones this fall, Polaris was barely visible within the sighting hole.
This benevolent account of the Georgia Guidestones also closely follows Hopi legends of a similar construction that

their ancestors built in order to track polar alignment to warn of the coming Day of Purification, a very similar catastrophe used as fodder for 2012 hysteria.

However, there is no reputable scientific evidence supporting the notion of an impending 2012 cataclysm. On the other hand, there are good reasons to believe that the Georgia Guidestones is an arrogant advertisement for the demented plans of a deranged but powerful cult to overthrow national governments and install a totalitarian global government.

If anything, 2012 hysteria will be used as a smokescreen for manmade chaos leading up to that event.

Astronomy-based events, or natural disasters more broadly, is but one theory to describe so catastrophic a drop in population. However, there is reason to consider for whom population control benefits and, apart from a general interest in nature, who could assume they would be one of the 500 million to survive and also contribute to the event that reduces the population. Van Smith uses this as the basis for his assertion that R.C. Christian is Ted Turner.

Smith highlights, among other evidence, Ted Turner’s interest in population control, which includes the following statement: “A total population of 250-300 million people, a 95% decline from present levels, would be ideal.”

To this end, Terry Melanson builds on this argument by adding Raymond Wiley’s observation that the monument’s language is reminiscent of “what I would define as late-1970s Ted Turner environmentalism. It’s got very much that kind of quality to it … and lots of mentions of nature, nature, nature.”

Melanson continues along this path, drawing connections with the Illuminati:
The edifice, its message and supposed author, bears the signature of a Rosicrucian, new age, elite environmental philanthropic ethos that reached its apogee in the 80s and early 90s – people like Ted Turner and Maurice Strong and the globalists in the Club of Rome and the Aspen Institute. Environmentalism, population control, impeding catastrophe, world government, allusions to esotericism or occult traditions – it is all there in the saga of the guidestones, just as it is with the new age elite-turned-globalist billionaires.

And traditionally, the “new world order” rhetoric of the elite has invariably been accompanied by the longing for some sort of “world government,” and disdain for patriotism and nationalism. It seems to have been coined in the 1860s by the founder of the Bahá’í Faith. According to Bahá’u’lláh, a genuine “New World Order” required the establishment of a World Government, World Parliament, World Code Of Law, World Tribunal, World Police Force, World Language, a permanent single currency, an international uniform tax, and unity of all the world’s religions under the umbrella of the Bahá’í Faith.
Yet, even with these theories in mind, we are still no closer in conceiving how the population will be so drastically reduced in size in order for this ‘new world order’ to exist. The topic, however, has no shortage of stabs in the dark made every day with regard to any number of natural disaster theories, biological contaminates, etc. We will look at some of these in future weeks.

NASA Spacecraft Reveals Recent Geological Activity on the Moon

New images from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) spacecraft show the moon's crust is being stretched, forming minute valleys in a few small areas on the lunar surface. Scientists propose this geologic activity occurred less than 50 million years ago, which is considered recent compared to the moon's age of more than 4.5 billion years.

A team of researchers analyzing high-resolution images obtained by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) show small, narrow trenches typically much longer than they are wide. This indicates the lunar crust is being pulled apart at these locations. These linear valleys, known as graben, form when the moon's crust stretches, breaks and drops down along two bounding faults. A handful of these graben systems have been found across the lunar surface.

"We think the moon is in a general state of global contraction because of cooling of a still hot interior," said Thomas Watters of the Center for Earth and Planetary Studies at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum in Washington, and lead author of a paper on this research appearing in the March issue of the journal Nature Geoscience. "The graben tell us forces acting to shrink the moon were overcome in places by forces acting to pull it apart. This means the contractional forces shrinking the moon cannot be large, or the small graben might never form."

This shows the largest of the newly detected graben found in highlands of the lunar farside. The broadest graben is about 500 meters (1,640 feet) wide and topography derived from Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) Narrow Angle Camera (NAC) stereo images indicates they are almost 20 meters (almost 66 feet) deep. The weak contraction suggests that the moon, unlike the terrestrial planets, did not completely melt in the very early stages of its evolution. Rather, observations support an alternative view that only the moon's exterior initially melted forming an ocean of molten rock.

In August 2010, the team used LROC images to identify physical signs of contraction on the lunar surface, in the form of lobe-shaped cliffs known as lobate scarps. The scarps are evidence the moon shrank globally in the geologically recent past and might still be shrinking today. The team saw these scarps widely distributed across the moon and concluded it was shrinking as the interior slowly cooled.

Based on the size of the scarps, it is estimated that the distance between the moon's center and its surface shank by approximately 300 feet. The graben were an unexpected discovery and the images provide contradictory evidence that the regions of the lunar crust are also being pulled apart.

"This pulling apart tells us the moon is still active," said Richard Vondrak, LRO Project Scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. "LRO gives us a detailed look at that process."

As the LRO mission progresses and coverage increases, scientists will have a better picture of how common these young graben are and what other types of tectonic features are nearby. The graben systems the team finds may help scientists refine the state of stress in the lunar crust.

"It was a big surprise when I spotted graben in the far side highlands," said co-author Mark Robinson of the School of Earth and Space Exploration at Arizona State University, principal investigator of LROC. "I immediately targeted the area for high-resolution stereo images so we could create a three-dimensional view of the graben. It's exciting when you discover something totally unexpected and only about half the lunar surface has been imaged in high resolution. There is much more of the moon to be explored."

The research was funded by the LRO mission, currently under NASA's Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington. LRO is managed by NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

Aliens May Destroy Humanity to Protect other Civilisations, Say Scientists

Rising greenhouse emissions could tip off aliens that we are a rapidly expanding threat, warns a report.

It may not rank as the most compelling reason to curb greenhouse gases, but reducing our emissions might just save humanity from a pre-emptive alien attack, scientists claim.

Watching from afar, extraterrestrial beings might view changes in Earth's atmosphere as symptomatic of a civilisation growing out of control – and take drastic action to keep us from becoming a more serious threat, the researchers explain.

This highly speculative scenario is one of several described by a Nasa-affiliated scientist and colleagues at Pennsylvania State University that, while considered unlikely, they say could play out were humans and alien life to make contact at some point in the future.

Shawn Domagal-Goldman of Nasa's Planetary Science Division and his colleagues compiled a list of plausible outcomes that could unfold in the aftermath of a close encounter, to help humanity "prepare for actual contact".

In their report, Would Contact with Extraterrestrials Benefit or Harm Humanity? A Scenario Analysis, the researchers divide alien contacts into three broad categories: beneficial, neutral or harmful.

Beneficial encounters ranged from the mere detection of extraterrestrial intelligence (ETI), for example through the interception of alien broadcasts, to contact with cooperative organisms that help us advance our knowledge and solve global problems such as hunger, poverty and disease.

Another beneficial outcome the authors entertain sees humanity triumph over a more powerful alien aggressor, or even being saved by a second group of ETs. "In these scenarios, humanity benefits not only from the major moral victory of having defeated a daunting rival, but also from the opportunity to reverse-engineer ETI technology," the authors write.

Other kinds of close encounter may be less rewarding and leave much of human society feeling indifferent towards alien life. The extraterrestrials may be too different from us to communicate with usefully. They might invite humanity to join the "Galactic Club" only for the entry requirements to be too bureaucratic and tedious for humans to bother with. They could even become a nuisance, like the stranded, prawn-like creatures that are kept in a refugee camp in the 2009 South African movie, District 9, the report explains.

The most unappealing outcomes would arise if extraterrestrials caused harm to humanity, even if by accident. While aliens may arrive to eat, enslave or attack us, the report adds that people might also suffer from being physically crushed or by contracting diseases carried by the visitors. In especially unfortunate incidents, humanity could be wiped out when a more advanced civilisation accidentally unleashes an unfriendly artificial intelligence, or performs a catastrophic physics experiment that renders a portion of the galaxy uninhabitable.

To bolster humanity's chances of survival, the researchers call for caution in sending signals into space, and in particular warn against broadcasting information about our biological make-up, which could be used to manufacture weapons that target humans. Instead, any contact with ETs should be limited to mathematical discourse "until we have a better idea of the type of ETI we are dealing with."

The authors warn that extraterrestrials may be wary of civilisations that expand very rapidly, as these may be prone to destroy other life as they grow, just as humans have pushed species to extinction on Earth. In the most extreme scenario, aliens might choose to destroy humanity to protect other civilisations.

"A preemptive strike would be particularly likely in the early phases of our expansion because a civilisation may become increasingly difficult to destroy as it continues to expand. Humanity may just now be entering the period in which its rapid civilisational expansion could be detected by an ETI because our expansion is changing the composition of the Earth's atmosphere, via greenhouse gas emissions," the report states.

"Green" aliens might object to the environmental damage humans have caused on Earth and wipe us out to save the planet. "These scenarios give us reason to limit our growth and reduce our impact on global ecosystems. It would be particularly important for us to limit our emissions of greenhouse gases, since atmospheric composition can be observed from other planets," the authors write.

Even if we never make contact with extraterrestrials, the report argues that considering the potential scenarios may help to plot the future path of human civilisation, avoid collapse and achieve long-term survival.

It's a story that has circulated in and out of the UFO community for years: Did former U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower have three meetings with extraterrestrials.

An ex-government consultant says the story is true that the 34th commander in chief chatted, if you will, with aliens at a New Mexico air base, according to reports.

No definitive proof has ever surfaced to confirm this president-meets-aliens tale. However, according to Timothy Good, Eisenhower and FBI officials arranged for the out-of-this-world summit at Holloman Air Force Base.

"Aliens have made both formal and informal contact with thousands of people throughout the world from all walks of life," Good, an author, lecturer and former consultant to Congress and the Pentagon, said on Frank Skinner's BBC2 program, "Opinionated."

Good claims that governments of the world have had ongoing contacts with ETs over many years.

The story about Eisenhower's close encounter of the very personal kind -- where he reportedly met with Nordic-looking aliens -- supposedly unfolded while the president was vacationing in Palm Springs, Calif., in February 1954.

Whether you believe this story or not, an interesting related side-story reared its head in 2010. A retired New Hampshire state representative, Henry McElroy Jr., taped an intriguing video announcement in which he revealed seeing a secret briefing document intended for Eisenhower.

This document, according to McElroy, contained information that aliens were in America and that Eisenhower could meet with them.

"To the best of my memory, this brief was pervaded with a sense of hope, and it informed President Eisenhower of the continued presence of extraterrestrial beings here in the United States of America," McElroy said on the video.

"The tone of the brief indicated to me that there was no need for concern, since these visitors were in no way causing any harm or had any intentions whatsoever of causing any disruption then or in the future," he explained.

McElroy goes on to say that, although he couldn't verify times or places where any meetings might have taken place between Eisenhower and "off-world astronauts," he believed that there were such meetings.

While it's certainly difficult to prove any of these things, we're left with the same question that always follows such stories: Who do you believe?

The Underground City of Derinkuyu (Video/Photos)

The Underground City of Derinkuyu  is an ancient multi-level underground city in the Derinkuyu district in Nevşehir Province, Turkey. It is on the road between Nevşehir and Niğde, at a distance of 29 km from Nevşehir. With its thirteen floors extending to a depth of approximately 85 m, it was large enough to shelter 30,000 thousands people together with their livestock and food stores. It is the largest excavated underground city in Turkey and is part of a network of several underground complexes found across Cappadocia.

Derinkuyu Underground City is one of several underground cities in the Cappadocia region of Turkey. Cappadocia itself is a natural wonder that civilizations throughout history utilized for its landscape. The surreal vista of Cappadocia is dotted with stone volcanic chimneys known as “fairy chimneys.” People carved dwellings, churches and stables out of these chimneys and other stone in Cappadocia. There are even structures in the area that modern man refer to as castles, though they are very unlike European castles that the word typically brings to mind. In a way, wind, time, rain and construction techniques have rendered the structures of Cappadocia and the Derinkuyu Underground City something like an ancient above and belowground labyrinth with lines not unlike the homes of the Whos down in Whoville.

Derinkuyu Underground City was discovered in 1963, when a modern, aboveground home in Derinkuyu was being renovated. The renovations led to the discovery of a cave that led to the underground city. It was an astonishing discovery, considering it is the biggest of all the excavated underground cities in Cappadocia. It goes 280 feet into the ground, contains thirteen stories and can fit roughly 20,000 individuals, according to a History Channel Ancient Aliens presentation. According to other sources, it could fit as many as 50,000 people. It contains wineries, storage space, living quarters and even stables for keeping livestock. Ventilation shafts bring air from above and roughly 15,000 smaller shafts distribute that air throughout the city.

The age of Derinkuyu is hard to determine, though the most popular estimates put the date of construction between 1,000 and 800 B.C.E. We do know of later civilizations staying in the Derinkuyu Underground City, particularly early Christians. However, there is no clue as to who built it and why. There are seemingly no artifacts from the time of its building. Furthermore, the structure itself cannot be dated as it is carved right out of the landscape. There is no quarry to investigate, apparently no contemporary texts on the subject and not even an oral record of its construction.

One theory regarding the age of the Derinkuyu Underground City is that the Phrygians built it around 800 B.C.E. They were there at that time, but there is not much more to go by than that. Another theory is that the Hittites built it. That would put the construction of Derinkuyu at least 200 years earlier, but possibly even a few hundred more than that. Another is that it was built by the Persian King Yima was ordered to build it by the god Ahura Mazda to protect his people from an ice age, as written in the Vendidad. The bottom line on this theory is that caves do not protect from ice ages. People still need food, fresh water and air, which might be difficult in deep snow and ice. Besides, the last glacial period was several thousand years before the earliest estimate for the city — from 110,000 to 10,000 years ago. That would put the construction of the Derinkuyu Underground City at roughly

The very fact that it is underground suggests that the Derinkuyu Underground City was built as a shelter for residents of the homes aboveground. Its later use as just that only cements the theory. What is interesting about this theory is the sheer size of Derinkuyu. To construct such a massive shelter, there had to have been a good reason. War and other social turmoil could explain it. It could protect from certain natural disasters as well. Whatever the case, the amount of foresight and effort that went into Derinkuyu would rival even modern emergency shelters, if that was its use. Building an emergency space for tens of thousands of people that is specifically for that use is not modern practice.

Another argument for Derinkuyu as a type of emergency shelter that protected its occupants from other people is its security system. The entrances to the city have large stone doors that can only be closed and opened from the inside. Each level is also protected by such doors. Now, this does suggest it was built to keep other people out. However, modern homes have locks. If people lived down there permanently, they might have had similar security.

An argument against Derinkuyu as a shelter is that it would have been easy to suffocate the people inside by closing up the ventilation shafts. The problem with this argument is that Derinkuyu was used for precisely that purpose later and there is no record that this ever happened. Even if it were used for everyday use, this would have been a weakness. The most likely explanation is that there was no way around this structural Achilles heel. There may have been greater hope of the enemy failing to find all of the shafts than there was of surviving an open attack aboveground. There may have also been warriors defending the city at ground level.

At this time, there is no way of knowing. In fact, there may never be any way of knowing. The city was occupied by people other than its builders later, effectively erasing whatever they may have left behind. One thing is certain, though. It made much more sense as a shelter than as a permanent dwelling. There were plenty of options for homes above ground and even ancient man appeared to know that open, clean air and separate dwellings for animals was the only way for a civilization to thrive.

Underwater Structure Thought To Be Over 14,000 Years Old & Man-made

Massive rock structure hidden 60-100 feet underwater found in 1987 in Yonaguni, Japan. Experts call it the greatest discovery in the history of underwater archeology. Its massive size is equivelent to 2 football fields. Geological evidence shows that it was submerged during the meltdown of the last ice age which means it was built over 14,000 years ago.

Some of its peculiar details include:

-Two closely spaced pillars which rise to within eight feet of the surface;
-The "Loop Road", a 5 m (16 ft) wide ledge that encircles the base of the formation on three sides;
-The "Totem", a stone column about 7 m (23 ft) tall;
-The "Dividing Wall", a straight wall 10 m (33 ft) long;
-The "Gosintai", an isolated boulder resting on a low platform;
-The "Turtle", a low star-shaped platform;
-The "Triangle Pool", a triangular depression with two large holes at its edge;
-The "Stage", an L-shaped rock.

Rachel, Nevada: Famous for UFO Sightings & Area 51 (PART ONE)

The tiny town of Rachel in Nevada is the most isolated and lonely place in America. Famous for UFO sightings, the population of approximately 98 people live in trailers and shacks, cut off from the rest of America and the World by hundreds of miles of dusty desert roads. The town is just 25 miles from the infamous 'Area 51' top secret military testing site where rumors of alien sightings have been rife since 1989. The Little A'Le'Inn provides a focal point for visiting tourists to meet and discuss UFO sightings over a cold beer.

Jupiter sounds (so strange!) NASA-Voyager recording

Fascinating recording of Jupiter sounds (electromagnetic "voices") by NASA-Voyager. The complex interactions of charged electromagnetic particles from the solar wind , planetary magnetosphere etc. create vibration "soundscapes". It sounds very interesting, even scary.

Jupiter is mostly composed of hydrogen and helium. The entire planet is made of gas, with no solid surface under the atmosphere. The pressures and temperatures deep in Jupiter are so high that gases form a gradual transition into liquids which are gradually compressed into a metallic "plasma" in which the molecules have been stripped of their outer electrons. The winds of Jupiter are a thousand metres per second relative to the rotating interior. Jupiter's magnetic field is four thousand times stronger than Earth's, and is tipped by 11° degrees of axis spin. This causes the magnetic field to wobble, which has a profound effect on trapped electronically charged particles. This plasma of charged particles is accelerated beyond the magnetosphere of Jupiter to speeds of tens of thousands of kilometres per second. It is these magnetic particle vibrations which generate some of the sound you hear on this recording.

Free To a Good Home: One Space Telescope, Still In Orbit

In an unusual move, our cash-strapped space agency is contemplating the donation of one of its still-functional space telescopes. The Galaxy Evolution Explorer mission is out of money, but the observatory still works just fine, so NASA might give it away — if Caltech wants it.

Probably not much would change for the daily life of the 9-year-old space telescope, which has been beaming back pictures of galaxies for way longer than it was designed to last. The California Institute of Technology already leads the mission and takes care of science operations and data analysis. But NASA owns and built the telescope, which was designed to have a life-cycle cost of $150 million. This donation would really be a legal thing, transferring ownership of the telescope as well as operation. Caltech would not give NASA any money, according to NASA.

GALEX, as it’s known to its friends, was placed into standby mode last week as officials prepared to shut it down permanently. It was initially recommended for decommissioning next year, but NASA acted faster to save money. It’s not clear how much this saves, however. Spaceflight Now reported the transfer plans on Friday.

Since its 2003 launch, GALEX has discovered plenty of neat things, including a gigantic comet-like tail behind a speeding star; "teenager" galaxies, which help to explain how galaxies evolve; and confirmation of the existence of dark energy.

GALEX collected this mosaic of Mira, a red giant star in the constellation Cetus, in late 2006. A tail stretching 13 light years long appeared in ultraviolet light behind Mira, which is charging through interstellar gas at a relative speed of 291,000 mph. Leaving a wake like a ship in calm seas, Mira is a variable star and can sometimes be seen with the naked eye, but its tail was never observed before GALEX produced this mosaic. Transferring ownership of a space telescope is a bit more complicated than re-homing a dog, but there is a provision in U.S. law that provides for such a deed. The Stevenson-Wydler Technology Innovation Act allows the transfer of government-owned research equipment to nonprofits or educational institutions, Spaceflight Now says. NASA has donated retired equipment under this act, but never a functioning spaceborne asset. Commercial satellites change hands frequently, but that’s a different story.

Caltech officials are discussing what to do, and will notify NASA by March 31, Spaceflight Now reports. Then GALEX will either get new owners or shut down for good.

The Best of NASA UFO Sightings

The most credible UFO sightings from NASA footage. Images from the Space Shuttle showing alien craft using controlled flight and propulsion. Alien craft take right turns, launch into space from Earth's atmosphere and create geometric formations behind the Shuttle. There is also footage of wormholes, ejecting spiral spores onto the planet, shot in multiple locations around the world.

Brazil UFO, July 2011- EXPLAIN THIS ONE! MSM Reports, Multiple Witnesses

On the night of July 23 and the morning of July 24, a revolving UFO was spotted above Embu São Paulo, Brazil, according to footage posted on YouTube.

According to Projeto Quartzo Azul, a Brazilian UFO website, there were multiple witnesses on the scene—some took photos and others shot videos.

The YouTube video includes footage from four different witnesses.

The object has a blue light at its center, surrounded by a circle of flashing white lights with smaller faint red ones between them.

It spins in a clockwise direction and appears to shoot out fire around one minute into the video. When filmed from the side on, the UFO has a blue glow.

Footage from the first three witnesses shows a circular object with a blue-white orb at the center, surrounded by white dots in a circle. However, the video from the fourth witness shows a blue-green triangular-shaped object spinning around.

Some viewers believe the object is actually an LED kite. "That would explain why it is rotating its side and doesn't travel beyond a given area," one commenter posted on YouTube.

However, an analysis provided in the YouTube video explains that it would be impossible for a toy to maintain a constant 45 degree angle without being affected by changes in the wind.

The press offices of Aeronautics in Brazil, and military police in Sao Paulo confirmed that there were no recorded UFO incidents during the time the object was filmed.
