NASA: Is Approaching Space Object Artificial?

NASA authorities report that an unknown object approaching the Earth from deep space is almost certainly artificial in origin rather than being an asteroid. Object 2010 KQ was detected by the Catalina Sky Survey in Arizona earlier this month, and subsequently tracked by NASA's asteroid-watching service, the Near-Earth Object Program headquartered at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California.

Observations by astronomer S J Bus, using the NASA-sponsored Infrared Telescope Facility in Mauna Kea, Hawaii, indicate that 2010 KQ's spectral characteristics do not match any of the known asteroid types, and the object's absolute magnitude (28.9) suggests it is only a few meters in size.

The mysterious artificial object has apparently made a close pass by the Earth, coming in almost to the distance of the Moon's orbit, and is now headed away again into the interplanetary void. The object has used no propulsion during the time NASA has had it under observation. However the spacewatch experts believe that it must have moved under its own power at some point, given its position and velocity.

"The orbit of this object is very similar to that of the Earth, and one would not expect a object to remain in this type of orbit for very long," said Paul Chodas, at JPL.

The experts believe that the object must be a spacecraft, or part of one - likely to be a booster stage from an interplanetary mission of the past, now drifting back in to Earth and out again. The next visit will probably be 2036, at which time there's a small chance that 2010 KQ will crash into the atmosphere and burn up.

The NASA graphic above shows the trajectory of the near-Earth object known as 2010 KQ, which the space agency said is likely a spent rocket stage that escaped the Earth-moon system years ago, and not an asteroid.

Strange Artifacts Found On Dark Side Of the Moon

Stories of 'intelligent artifacts' and 'bases' on the far side of the moon have been lurking in the shadows for decades since the Apollo years. A number of independent lunar researchers have been laboriously going through countless NASA photographs and, to some, it appears that the long wait for verification of these rumors just might getting closer. If that turns out to be the case, confirmation might come not from an official NASA revelation or U.S. Military disclosure but from the independent study of striking anomalies in the Lobachevsky Crater, for example, as imaged by Apollo 16 and by the U.S. Navy's recent Clementine moon mapping mission.

Tired of hearing those stories of 'intelligent artifacts' and 'bases' on the far side of the moon that have been lurking in the shadows in the decades since the Apollo years? Well, it appears that the long wait for verification of these rumors just might be over.... and, if so, confirmation will not have come from an official NASA revelation or U.S. Military disclosure but from independent study of strikin

g anomalies in the Lobachevsky Crater as imaged by Apollo 16 and by the U.S. Navy's recent Clementine moon mapping mission.

American researcher Steve Wingate was the first person to bring world attention to the anomaly in the far side Lobachevsky Crater by posting the old Apollo 16 photograph and several new views from the recent Clementine mapping mission to the Lunascan Mailing List. Even more recently, eminent German geologist and science writer Dr. Johannes Fiebag confirmed Wingate's discovery of an "unusual and possibly artificial structure" on the mysterious far side of the moon as shown in the 25 year old NASA Apollo 16 orbital photograph, AS16/10075825.

Dr. Fiebag, highly-respected, is the author of two recent books: "Mars - Planet Des Lebens", Econ-Publisher, Düsseldorf 1996; and "Mission Pathfinder", (Econ Publisher, Düsseldorf 1997).

Below is the original NASA Apollo 16 photograph which we will now examine in extraordinary detail.

Upon examination of the photograph, it was apparent that both Steve Wingate and then Dr. Fiebag's claims about the Apollo 16 photograph of the Lobachevsky Crater merited immediate closer examination. The picture was sent to graphics analyst Liz Edwards at IWonder Productions for enhancement and further analysis. Her work quickly underscored the fact that there are indeed some bizarre anomalies in the photograph, in fact there are several.

(Ms. Edwards' most recently exposed what appears to be a tiny missile in a photograph of a New York sunset at the exact time of the TWA 800 tragedy.)

Ms. Edwards made it clear that her multi-stage "enhancement process takes the image to its most critical viewing size without distorting the objects in question." Below, is her first enhancement of the NASA Apollo 16 photograph...

This first enhancement (above) is remarkable in itself in that there are apparently four clearly strange and unusual 'objects' or anomalies in the Lobachevsky Crater.

  • Item "A" demonstrates a strange white rectangular shape along the ridge of the crater rim and includes an unusual shadow below and to its right.
  • Item "B" appears to be a spectacular 'spire' soaring perhaps hundreds of meters straight up from the lunar surface and standing next to what appears to be a rectangular shadowed hole or depression running from its base out to the right.
  • Item "C" smaller but odd, sits in the bottom of the small valley or ravine below the crater rim.
  • Item "D" is set apart from the other objects and projects an extraordinary and bright reflective surface.

Here is Ms. Edwards' close-up enhancement of three of the subject areas.

Item "A", the ridge-top on the left, draws immediate attention because of its stunning line-up of round protuberances. These appear to be an integral part of the white colored area or cap on top of the ridge. These black, holed objects are lined-up in such a way as to provoke images of large 'ventilation' or exhaust stacks as might be seen on an ocean liner or large industrial plant...only much larger. These objects seem anything but a trick of light and shadow. A spectacular formation. Evidence of volcanism? Part of a major project or operation? What is it?

Item "B" presents what appears to be a dazzling image rising straight up from the lunar surface many hundreds of feet into the void of space. Are we witnessing this tower-like object being hit by the sun's rays and appearing to be thereby illuminated....as one would expect a piece of crystal to do if struck by the sun in this fashion? Or, is the entire 'tower' simply some type of photographic anomaly? If real, it is a stunning artifact...a crystal lunar obelisk? A construct of ET technology somehow linked to the bizarre ridge-top 'vent' pipes above on the crater rim? A part of a mining or excavation operation directly related to the dark, shadowed surface depression next to it?

Item "C", at the bottom of the ravine below the ridge, smaller, but seemingly also rising up out of the lunar soil to pose mute questions that we can only ponder.

Maximum Object Enhancement

Item "A". Again, this is an absolutely stunning display of
  • A long series of ridge-top holes or openings or vents?
  • What are they?
  • Evidence of ancient volcanism?
  • The results of some type of post asteroid impact heat release?
  • Or....are they intelligently devised and part of an operational base and installation?
  • Funnels to carry some gaseous emission out from deep below?
  • Almost like Lunar 'coral'. What do you think?

Item "B" presents itself as major enigma. Think about it...

Item "C". Smaller 'spire' like item.

By the way Dr. Fiebag has not openly described his discoveries as necessarily representing an extraterrestrial artifact on the lunar surface but makes it clear that he cannot rule that possibility out.

Item "D" is very much its own enigma. Sitting well away from the other primary anomalies, this small item puts out a distinct shadow and shape and has further been enhanced by Ms. Edwards as displayed in the small inset in the lower right corner of the picture. Again, what do you think??

Lobachevsky 'Excavation' or 'Shadow'

Recently Imaged By Clementine

Courtesy NASA and Steve Wingate

  • Where is the 'tower' next to the 'excavation' in the recent Clementine photographs of Lobachevsky?
  • Was it simply a defect in the original Apollo 16 photograph? Hardly likely.

  • Where is the 'tower' next to the 'excavation' in the recent Clementine photographs of Lobachevsky?
  • Was it simply a defect in the original Apollo 16 photograph? Hardly likely.
  • Then where did it go?
  • Was it removed when it's task was completed?
Analysis of the 'excavation' anomaly area suggests the shape of the crater appears to have changed noticeably from the time of the Apollo picture more than 20 years earlier.
  • Could this apparently different lunar terrain texture have resulted from a major excavation and/or mining operation which entered into the side of the crater rim?
  • What do you think?
  • Or, is this dark area all just a 'lava flow' as NASA states?

Witchcraft and Aliens: Were Medieval Witches Actually Early Abductees?

Between the 14th and 18th centuries, somewhere between 40,000 and 60,000 people on the European continent were tried and executed for witchcraft. Most of these people were burned alive in the public square of the nearest town, and most were also tortured before burning. Between 70% and 80% of all 'witches' executed were women, but many men, children, and even animals were executed as well.

What is most strange about the witchcraft trials of medieval Europe is that, despite being studied in great detail by historians and scholars of many stripes and biases, no single persuasive explanation has emerged for why they took place.

What is also interesting is that medieval 'witches' had much in common with today's 'abductees', and the witch hunters also resemble some of today's abduction 'researchers' in surprisingly consistent ways.

Something fairly powerful has to be going on either inside the public imagination or out in the real world or both, in order to sustain nearly four centuries of torture, carnage, and religious persecution. The Church did not simply try and burn witches: It aggressively sought them out to try and burn them.

The infamous Malleus Maleficarum (compiled in 1486) is a detailed instructional Church manual on how to identify a witch and what to do when you find one. Professional witch hunters, employed by the Church, roamed the European countryside searching out witches and delivering them into the hands of Church inquisitors who usually ended up torturing and killing them to save their souls.

Although the Malleus isn't a word-for-word precursor to Intruders or Missing Time, many elements are similar enough to warrant a closer look.

How to Identify a Witch or Abductee

Although today we do not burn alive abductees alive, the modern process for identifying an abductee is remarkably similar to the medieval process for identifying a witch. Witches and abductees share the follow characteristics:
  • Marks on the Body.Abductees and witches are both thought to be physically marked in some way. In the case of witches the mark might be a mole or birthmark, or if no such mark was found, the examiner  declared the discovery of 'an invisible mark.' In the case of abductees, researchers look for scoop marks, triangle-shaped scars, or evidence of alien implants.

  • Supernatural Sex. Witches were believed to have sexual intercourse with inhuman agents of the Devil called incubi (male demons) and succubi (female demons). Abductees are often believed to have intercourse with inhuman or half human alien beings during the abduction experience.

  • Flying by Night. Witches had the ability to fly through the night sky. Alien abductees often have vivid memories of flying or being transported through the sky or through space.

  • Messing with Animals. Witches were said to possess the ability to kill farm animals without drawing blood. Alien abductions are often associated with bloodless cattle mutilations or the draining of blood from small farm animals (chupacabra incidents are often paired with UFO sightings).

  • Miscarriage and Disappearing Fetuses. Witches were believed to have the ability to cause miscarriage or cause fetuses to disappear. Alien abductees often report disappearing pregnancies or mysterious anomalous events involving human reproduction.

  • Circular Meetings in the Deep Woods. Witches were thought to meet with the Devil in the woods, holding highly sexualized rituals naked in a stone circle. (See drawing above.) Abductees are taken into a circular craft, often from remote or wooded locations, where they are then examined naked on stone or metal slab.

  • The Devil and the Greys. The physical description of the 'Devil' of the medieval witchcraft trials (to whom witches were said to agree to a pact or contract) bears remarkable similarities to the tall Greys described by abductees. Tan or grey in color, the Devil and the tall Grey both have cloven feet, strange skin, and demand perverse sexual allegiance. The Devil's eyes are said to 'pierce' the eyes of women and control them in this way. The Greys control by means of their hypnotic huge eyes.

  • Associations with Bright Lights in the Sky. Both Satan and aliens are associated with bright lights in the sky. Satan was said to be the "brightest angel in the sky" before he fell to earth for rebelling against God. Alien abductions are often (though not always) associated with brilliant lights in the sky (UFOs) that come down to earth to release frighting Greys with a baffling sexual agenda.
David Hufford's The Terror That Comes in the Night

Folklorist David Hufford wrote a landmark paper about the relationship between sleep paralysis and the legend of the 'Old Hag'. This tale occurs in every age and across all cultures. In the story, a sleeping person wakes to find a hideous creature (the 'Old Hag') sitting or pressing down upon his or her chest. The victim is unable to move during this experience, which often includes sexual intercourse with the fantastic other. The incubus/succubus tales of medieval Europe are variants of the 'Old Hag' myth, and Hufford believes many alien abduction stories are modern variants of this universal tale.

However, Hufford's groundbreaking thesis was that the 'Old Hag' narrative was universal because it referred to a real human experience.

This was controversial stuff in the dry, methodical world of academic folklore research. Up until the time of Hufford's paper it was assumed that narrative traditions and physical experience were rigidly separated categories. Stories were just stories. Folklorists collected them.

Folkloric tales were assumed by definition to refer only to imaginary events and experiences passed down by specific cultural groups for various sociological purposes: indoctrination into the mores of the group being one of the main purposes. Hufford was saying that at least some universal myths and legends appeared to be an attempt to convey the content of a genuine experience in the language of the culture and time in which the experience occurred.
So during medieval times when the Church held enormous power and controlled people through vivid descriptions of hellfire, damnation, and the wages of sin, the experience was interpreted as demonic and the abductor as Satan. In ancient Sumeria the experience was intrepreted as divine. In modern technological culture the experience is interpreted as extraterrestrial. But the same experiental elements are repeated in each instance; they are simply spun with a different explanation of what it all means.

Hufford was careful not to ascribe any particular interpretation to the raw experience underlying these stories; he only sought to make the argument that some kind of real experience was at the base of the stories. Hufford made a careful, exhaustive (and rather dry) philosophical argument that the scientific term 'sleep paralysis' is a description (and hence, another myth), not an explanation.

Hufford felt that the experience itself remains unexplained.

We don't know what causes these experiences. We don't know why the experience has these predictable and bizarre elements. We've just slapped a descriptive label--'sleep paralysis'--on something that has apparently been plaguing mankind for as long as man has been able to tell stories about it.

The Problem With the ET Hypothesis

One of the biggest obstacles to understanding UFO and alien abduction phenomena is the ET hypothesis, the belief that visitors from outer space are causing these experiences and events. We really don't know that, but the tendency to interpret all these phenomena through a modern technological filter is so strong that today the term UFO has today become synomymous with 'spacecraft', even though its original meaning was simply something flying through the sky that could not be identified. 'Unidentified Flying Object' means we don't know what it is. And we don't.

If we KNEW it was a spacecraft, then it would NOT be a UFO. It would be a spacecraft.

What are the chances that our current cultural filter is any more correct than the medieval one that ascribed these phenomena to devils, or the ancient one that ascribed them  to Isis, or the medical one that ascribes them to a mysterious brain disorder called sleep paralysis, or the northern Scandavian one that ascribes them to the appearance of the 'Old Hag' (a folkloric harbinger of death)?

Weirdly, Huffords ideas get little uptake in ufology because they are seen as acribing the phenomena to 'myth', which is popularly understood by ufologists (who seem not to actuall read this stuff) to mean 'made up story that isn't true in any way'.

That understanding is the exact opposite of the compelling original argument made by Hufford, an argument that supports the notion that something real is going on, but that we just don't know what it is. Hufford's work could be used to support further scientific or academic study or these phenomena, but in a weird twist of illogic, it is used to dismiss them by both camps.

At least we aren't burning people alive over the experience these days.

But it would be nice to know what it was actually all about.

Frugal Aliens Might Be Sending in a Cost-Effective Way

The Search for Extra-terrestrial Intelligence (SETI) has been the focus of a dedicated group of scientists for the past 50 years.  The process, developed in the 1960s, involves listening for signals from nearby stars and trying to decipher any type of intentional message from among the noise of space. And, make no mistake about it, space is noisy.

No signals have been found yet, and that has some researchers wondering if there isn’t a better and more cost-effective way to monitor signals.  But, has anybody thought about what sending messages across space might cost a civilization?  Gregory Benford, an astrophysicist at University of California-Irvine is. He’s teamed up with his twin brother James, who is a physicist specializing in microwave technology, to look at the problem from the point of view of the folks on other worlds who we have been hoping were sending messages to us.  Their conclusions, publihsed in the June of the journal Astrobiology, assume that any alien civilization might want to save money and resources and send their messages in the most cost-effective way possible. This means optimizing the use of bandwidth and sending narrowly focused beams that carry pulsed signals in the 1- to 10-gigahertz range.

James Benford likens that approach to being more like Twitter, with its shortened, efficient methodology of sending messages.  James and Gregory (who is also a science fiction writer) have caught the attention of the SETI community with their so-called “Benford Beacons”.  Researchers are taking a look at their current efforts, which focus their receivers on narrow-band input. They’ve come to the conclusion that they may be looking for the wrong kind of signals. The Benfords and a growing number of scientists involved in the hunt for extraterrestrial life advocate adjusting SETI receivers to maximize their ability to detect direct, broadband beacon blasts.

Once that’s done, the next question will focus on where to look for these little beacons. The Benfords suggest star-rich areas of the Milky Way, particularly toward the center where stars are at least a billion years older than the Sun. Those stars might stand a good chance of harboring life of the intelligent variety.

To hear more about these Benford Beacons, watch this video interview with James Benford.

If you’re interested in learning more about all the aspects of SETI, consider attending SETICon, being held August 13-15, 2010. Details at are SETIcon.com.

Electric Tron Lightcycle Is Street-Legal & Amazing

There's no denying it: every Tron fan pictured himself on one of those amazingly designed, super-fast bikes from the movie. Parker Brothers Choppers turned that dream into reality a year ago, when they created the first Tron Lightcycle, but now they've taken it a step further and turned the gas-guzzling beast into an electric bike.

The all-new Electric Tron Lightcycle is powered by a 96 volt electric motor and lithium ion batteries. Its top speed is in excess of 100 mph, and its range is 100 miles on a single range, with a mere 35-minute recharge time.

As for practicality, we're not experts on motorcycles, but it does seem a bit hard to ride. We guess it's a small price to pay for the looks you'll be getting when riding this beauty — especially at night, when the bike lights up just like the one in the movie. .

Pricing and availability are unknown at this point, but as a reference, the old, gas-powered version costs close to $55,000. Check out a video of the Electric Tron Lightcycle in action below.

NASA's about to declare 'no fly zones' on the moon!

Tauranga astronomer Stuart Murray says NASA’s move to declare ‘no fly zones’ on the moon is “a bit precious”.

NASA,  the organisation which pulled the pin on its ageing shuttle fleet without offering a replacement, and is now contemplating ending the life of the international space station – is planning on introducing lunar no fly zones by the end of September.

The zones are intended to preserve the Apollo landing sites and artefacts left on the moon during the manned landing programme 40 years ago.

NASA’s no fly zones are prompted by the Google Lunar X prize, the $30 million competition for the first privately funded team to send a robot to the moon.

The robot has to be able to move 500 metres and send images from the moon. Precise landing near the Apollo sites would get them more money.

“Personally I think it’s fair game for anybody to try and get pictures,” says Stuart.

“It is 40 year old stuff – that’s my own personal opinion.

“I really can’t see the reason for it (no fly zones), these things become a bit precious don’t they.”

There are more than three dozen historical lunar sites where Apollo programme remains are located, which include the footprints of the first explorers on the moon and the rubbish they left behind.

NASA is proposing 2km no fly zones over the sites.

The Apollo 11 and 17 sites will be off limits, with ground-travel buffers of 75 metres and 225 metres from each respective lunar lander, states the July 20 guidelines of NASA, as published in Science.

According to Science, NASA is expected to come up with a set of “recommendations” for spacecraft and astronauts visiting “US Government property on the moon”.

The property was abandoned and the 1967 Outer Space Treaty makes it clear that the lunar surface has no owner, so the recommendations will not be legally binding.

The restriction list includes preventing future explorers from studying discarded food and abandoned astronaut faeces.

Scientific study of the discarded food will reveal the viability of bacteria on the moon and, if present, how they have mutated and survived after decades of exposure to solar radiation and hard vacuum.

A study of any metallic objects left on the moon would reveal how these materials have degraded after prolonged exposure to the lunar environment.

“I can’t see any reason why they should not allow it,” says Stuart.

“It would be for the gain of everybody, including NASA and the people on this planet.”

NASA recently published pictures taken from its Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter showing the Apollo 12, 14 and 17 landing sites.

Stuart says he’s recorded the item and will put the pictures on DVD.

“I was intrigued by the news item, and in the fact they have recorded the photographs of both foot prints and tyre tracks,” says Stuart.

He’s going to show them at the upcoming Tauranga Astronomical Society meeting, and he will keep a copy on hand for people like the man who accosted him last week – arguing that the Americans never landed on the moon.

Roswell UFO Controversy: Former Air Force Officer Says Gen. Ramey Lied to Cover Up Space Ship Crash

The Roswell UFO controversy may be 64 years old, but it shows no sign of heading into retirement.

One thing we know for sure: On July 8, 1947, the front page of the Roswell Daily Record proclaimed that a flying saucer had been captured by the Roswell Army Air Field.

The U.S. Air Force had issued a press release that day stating that a flying saucer had been "captured," and photos were released of soldiers examining metallic-looking objects, presumably pieces of a crashed balloon.

Then the controversy began. At a press conference later that day in Ft. Worth, Texas, Air Force Brig. Gen. Roger Ramey essentially recanted the entire story, announcing instead that the debris was simply pieces of a fallen weather balloon.

Speculation of what really happened has never truly ended. George Filer, a retired Air Force intelligence officer, told The Huffington Post that he believes Ramey was forced to lie about the Roswell incident.

And, in news that will come as a shock even to ardent UFO researches, he told The Huffington Post in an exclusive interview that Ramey's wife told him he was "embarrassed about having to lie about the weather balloon."

Over his 20-year career, Filer regularly briefed generals and congressmen about a wide range of security issues, including UFO sightings, up through the Vietnam War.

"It is my opinion that President Truman was there [at Fort Worth] and that he made the decision that it should be held at the highest levels," Filer said.

"The reason I believe that is that I had talked with Mrs. Ramey. She would never admit that she knew anything about aliens, but she did say that [her husband] was very embarrassed about having to lie about the weather balloon -- he was very upset about that."

"She also admitted that they became good friends with the Trumans," Filer added. "My point is: How does a one-star general become a good friend with the president of the United States?"

None of this comes as a surprise to former nuclear physicist Stanton T. Friedman. He's the original civilian investigator of the Roswell UFO incident and the most outspoken scientist who believes there is overwhelming evidence that alien spacecrafts are visiting Earth. He, too, has talked with Mrs. Ramey.

"From talking to her, I had no reason to believe A) that she knew intimate details about Roswell or any other such event; or B) that she made up this story because it is consistent with a man of reasonable character who followed orders as one would certainly have expected him to," Friedman said.

Both Filer and Friedman -- the military man and the scientist -- said they believe the Roswell UFO was an alien spacecraft, that Earth is currently visited by extraterrestrials and that only individuals with very specific "need to know" credentials have access to this information. Both are speaking at next week's MUFON Symposium in Irvine, Calif.

"We are being visited on a regular basis -- probably for thousands of years -- by aliens from other planets," Filer said. "Their technology is much more advanced than what we have. Even though we don't like to think of ourselves in this way, in a lot of ways, we're primitive compared to them."

New wrinkles are constantly being added to the Roswell conspiracy theory. Author Annie Jacobsen unveiled a whopper this year in her book "Area 51: An Uncensored History of America's Top Secret Military Base," that alleged the alien spaceship crash was actually a hoax contrived by Soviet leader Joseph Stalin and Nazi scientist Josef Mengele. There was no crash, according to Jacobsen, but the Communist dictator and "the Angel of Death" allegedly sent children surgically altered to look like aliens to Roswell in a remote-controlled craft to frighten Americans.

Friedman echoed Filer's sentiment. "People need to recognize that the real situation about where we fit in the scheme of things is very different from the way it's been portrayed," Friedman said. "In my view of what's going on, there are loads of civilizations out there all over the place, and that we are not very significant.

"[The aliens] would instantly recognize that we don't qualify for membership in a galactic federation because we're such a primitive society whose major activity is obviously tribal warfare."

Could aliens be living on planets deep within black holes?

At the centre of some black holes is 'an area where space and time exists'

Colonies of aliens living on planets within black holes may not be as far-fetched as it sounds.

Some black holes have a complex internal structure that allows photons, particles and planets to orbit a central singularity, according to one scientist.

A singularity is the region in a black hole when space and time become infinite.

Home to aliens? Planets that orbit inside a charged and rotating black hole could exist, a scientist said. The outer ring in this image depicts a planet in orbit, while the inner rainbow ring shows orbiting photons

However, Professor Vyacheslav Dokuchaev claims that at the centre of certain black holes, and under the right conditions, is an area where the fabric of space and time exists once more.

If a charged and rotating black hole is large enough, he said, it can weaken the tidal forces that are beyond the event horizon - the point where nothing, not even light, can escape a black hole's gravity.

Scientists have long known that photons can survive in stable periodic orbits inside such charged black holes.

However Professor Dokuchaev said that a black hole's inner Cauchy horizon - the area where dimensions switch back again - can also accommodate particles and even planets.

These manage to exist without ever getting sucked all the way into the black hole and would derive light and heat from the orbiting protons and from the energy of the central singularity, he said.
An artist's impression of the tremendous gravitational pull of a giant black hole on a passing star(R) which is first stretched by tidal forces until it is torn apart
Professor Dokuchaev, from the Institute for Nuclear Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow, speculates that these conditions could prove self-sufficient for alien life.

He said: 'This internal black hole domain, hidden by two horizons from the whole external universe, is indeed a suitable place.

'Advanced civilisations may live safely inside the supermassive black holes in the galactic nuclei without being visible from the outside.'

Earlier this year scientists discovered that the black hole M87 is almost twice as big as had previously been thought.

It was observed in M87, by far the largest and most distant galaxy some 50million light years away.

Researchers said that it may have formed as a result of hundreds of smaller black holes merging into one at some point in the past.

As a point of comparison, the black hole at the centre of the Milky Way is 1,000 times smaller.

Super-Civilizations Might Live Off Black Holes

The sad unplugging of the Allen Telescope Array due to lack of funding brings a screeching halt, at least temporarily, to the most ambitious search for "hello" radio transmissions from E.T.

But perhaps it's time to simply think far outside of the box regarding our preconceptions of how to find extraterrestrial civilizations, says Clement Vidal of the Evolution, Complexity and Cognition group at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. And, the most advanced aliens may be the easiest to find.

ANALYSIS: Cosmic Rebirth Encoded in Background Radiation?

In a recent paper, he emphasizes that we have to look at a variety of search strategies in solving the mystery of our cosmic loneliness -- that is, if we are satisfied with simply finding E.T. and not communicating with it.

Vidal's reasoning: The universe is so old there have to be far-advanced civilizations out there, billions of years more evolved than us. They have to be doing super-human engineering feats that are recognizable across intergalactic space. "Super-human" might also mean that the most advanced life-forms could very likely be post-biological. They have evolved far beyond being creatures of flesh and blood, as described in Arthur C. Clarke's "2001:A Space Odyssey."

What defines a super-civilization? In 1964, Russian astrophysicist Nikolai Kardashev proposed a scheme for classifying technologically advanced alien societies. A Type I civilization uses energy resources on a planet-wide scale, like us. A Type II civilization would have 10 billion times more energy available by trapping the total output of its central star -- perhaps by building a shell around it called a Dyson sphere. A Type III civilization would tap the energy resources of an entire galaxy -- only God knows how! This would give a further increase to power available by at least a factor of 10 billion.

Homemade Universe

Civilizations may try to live forever by exploiting the time-dilation effects near a black hole to hibernate and survive into the very far-future universe. Something like this is wonderfully described in Isaac Asimov's short story "The Last Question." A hyper-computer called the Cosmic AC reboots the universe after our cosmos has fully entropied. After mulling over the darkness, the multidimensional machine says: "Let there be light!"

Ultimately, a super-civilization may attempt to artificially create a universe in the laboratory via black hole fabrication. This far-out notion of artificial cosmogenesis might explain why the many constants in our universe are so precisely tuned for our existence.

For example dark energy -- a repulsive form of gravity -- is a whopping 123 orders of magnitude weaker than what would have been predicted from quantum physics. This could not have happened by coincidence unless there is an infinity of parallel universes with their own different dark energy values, speculate some astrophysicists.

Or instead, dark energy is a signal of –- dare I say -- intelligent design. I’m not implying spiritual metaphysics here, but perhaps our universe might simply be a science fair project of an entity from an exo-universe.

Don’t talk to aliens, warns Stephen Hawking (VIDEO)

The aliens are out there and Earth had better watch out, at least according to Stephen Hawking. He has suggested that extraterrestrials are almost certain to exist — but that instead of seeking them out, humanity should be doing all it that can to avoid any contact.

The suggestions come in a new documentary series in which Hawking, one of the world’s leading scientists, will set out his latest thinking on some of the universe’s greatest mysteries.

Alien life, he will suggest, is almo
st certain to exist in many other parts of the universe: not just in planets, but perhaps in the centre of stars or even floating in interplanetary space.

Hawking’s logic on aliens is, for him, unusually simple. The universe, he points out, has 100 billion galaxies, each containing hundreds of millions of stars. In such a big place, Earth is unlikely to be the only planet where life has evolved.

“To my mathematical brain, the numbers alone make thinking about aliens perfectly rational,” he said. “The real challenge is to work out what aliens might actually be like.”

The answer, he suggests, is that most of it will be the equivalent of microbes or simple animals — the sort of life that has dominated Earth for most of its history.

One scene in his documentary for the Discovery Channel shows herds of two-legged herbivores browsing on an alien cliff-face where they are picked off by flying, yellow lizard-like predators. Another shows glowing fluorescent aquatic animals forming vast shoals in the oceans thought to underlie the thick ice coating Europa, one of the moons of Jupiter.

Such scenes are speculative, but Hawking uses them to lead on to a serious point: that a few life forms could be intelligent and pose a threat. Hawking believes that contact with such a species could be devastating for humanity.

He suggests that aliens might simply raid Earth for its resources and then move on: “We only have to look at ourselves to see how intelligent life might develop into something we wouldn’t want to meet. I imagine they might exist in massive ships, having used up all the resources from their home planet. Such advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonise whatever planets they can reach.”

He concludes that trying to make contact with alien races is “a little too risky”. He said: “If aliens ever visit us, I think the outcome would be much as when Christopher Columbus first landed in America, which didn’t turn out very well for the Native Americans.”

The completion of the documentary marks a triumph for Hawking, now 68, who is paralysed by motor neurone disease and has very limited powers of communication. The project took him and his producers three years, during which he insisted on rewriting large chunks of the script and checking the filming.

John Smithson, executive producer for Discovery, said: “He wanted to make a programme that was entertaining for a general audience as well as scientific and that’s a tough job, given the complexity of the ideas involved.”

Hawking has suggested the possibility of alien life before but his views have been clarified by a series of scientific breakthroughs, such as the discovery, since 1995, of more than 450 planets orbiting distant stars, showing that planets are a common phenomenon.

So far, all the new planets found have been far larger than Earth, but only because the telescopes used to detect them are not sensitive enough to detect Earth-sized bodies at such distances.

Another breakthrough is the discovery that life on Earth has proven able to colonise its most extreme environments. If life can survive and evolve there, scientists reason, then perhaps nowhere is out of bounds.

Hawking’s belief in aliens places him in good scientific company. In his recent Wonders of the Solar System BBC series, Professor Brian Cox backed the idea, too, suggesting Mars, Europa and Titan, a moon of Saturn, as likely places to look.

Similarly, Lord Rees, the astronomer royal, warned in a lecture earlier this year that aliens might prove to be beyond human understanding.

“I suspect there could be life and intelligence out there in forms we can’t conceive,” he said. “Just as a chimpanzee can’t understand quantum theory, it could be there are aspects of reality that are beyond the capacity of our brains.”

Is ET using Twitter? Scientists claim aliens are likely to be sending short messages to us from space

Sometimes it seems as if the expansion of the social networking phenomenon knows no bounds.

And now scientists say even aliens might not be immune to Twitter.

They could have been using cosmic 'tweets' to contact us for decades, researchers claim - but we have been missing them.

The reason? While any 'lost in space' messages wouldn't exactly be restricted to 140 characters, as on the website, a study suggests ET is more likely to send out short, directed messages than continuous signals beamed in all directions.

Because alien civilisations are likely to strive to limit waste and make their signalling technology efficient.

'This approach is more like Twitter and less like War and Peace,' said Dr James Benford, a physicist and president of Microwave Sciences.

His twin brother Gregory, an astrophysicist at the University of California, added: 'Whatever the life form, evolution selects for economy of resources. 'Transmitting signals across light years would require considerable resources.'

The brothers looked at the search for another life form in the galaxy from the alien's point of view. They concluded that scientists involved in America's Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence, or SETI, may have been taking the wrong approach for five decades.Writing in the journal Astrobiology, the Benfords said alien signals would not be blasted out in all directions but narrowly directed in the one to ten gigahertz broadband signal range.SETI's search is like a lighthouse sweeping the galactic plane, say the brothers, but that could leave many days when brief Twitter-like bursts of 'here we are' flashes from alien civilisations go undetected.

The Benfords also said SETI scientists had been looking in the wrong place.Their strategy involves listening out for unusual bleeps from targeted nearby stars. But they should be aiming at the centre of the galaxy instead, said the Benfords.'The stars there are a billion years older than our sun, which suggests a greater possibility of contact with an advanced civilisation than pointing SETI receivers outward to the newer and less crowded edge of our galaxy,' said Gregory Benford.'The SETI effort is worth continuing, but our common-sense approach seems more likely to a answer those questions,' he added.

UFO files: Winston Churchill 'feared panic' over Second World War RAF incident

Winston Churchill was accused of ordering a cover-up of a Second World War encounter between a UFO and a RAF bomber because he feared public "panic" and loss of faith in religion, newly released secret files disclose.

The former Prime Minister allegedly banned reporting of the “bizarre” incident, off the east coast of England, for half a century amid fears disclosures about unidentified flying objects would create public hysteria.

He is said to have made the orders during a secret war meeting with US General Dwight Eisenhower, the then commander of the Allied Forces, at an undisclosed location in America during the latter part of the conflict.

The claims are contained in thousands of pages of declassified files on UFOs, released on Thursday online by the National Archives.

The 18 files, which cover from 1995 to 2003, are made up of more than 5,000 pages of reports, letters, and drawings drawn from correspondence with the public and questions raised in parliament.

The allegations involving Churchill were made by the grandson of one his personal bodyguards, an RAF officer who overheard the discussion, who wrote to the Ministry of Defence in 1999 inquiring about the incident after his grandfather disclosed details to his family.

According to the series of letters, written by the guard's grandson who is now a physicist from Leicester, a reconnaissance plane and its crew were returning from a mission over occupied Europe when they were involved in the war incident.

During their flight, on the English coast, possibly near Cumbria, their aircraft was approached by a metallic UFO which shadowed them.

Photographs of the object, which the crew claimed had “hovered noiselessly” near the plane, were taken by the crew.

Later, during discussions about the unexplained incident, the two men were claimed to have become so concerned by the incident that Churchill ordered it remain secret for 50 years or more.

During the meeting, a weapons expert dismissed suggestions the object was a missile as the event was "totally beyond any imagined capabilities of the time".

Another person at the meeting raised the possibility of a UFO, at which point Churchill ordered the report to be classified for at least half a century and reviewed by the prime minister to stop “panic” spreading.

“There was a general inability for either side to match a plausible account to these observations, and this caused a high degree of concern,” wrote the scientist, whose details are redacted.

"Mr Churchill is reported to have made a declaration to the effect of the following: 'This event should be immediately classified since it would create mass panic among the general population and destroy one's belief in the Church'."

Apart from telling his daughter – the scientist’s mother – about the incident when she was nine, the bodyguard, who was “greatly affected by his experience”, only disclosed the details to his wife on his deathbed in 1973.

The scientist, also an expert in astronomy who said he developed software for use in "spacecraft thermal engineering", was told years later by his mother.

Stressing he was not a “crackpot”, he said he wanted to investigate the science behind the incident after his grandfather, who was bound by the Official Secrets Act, remained convinced that the object was secret technology being tested by a foreign power.

After investigating the claims, an MoD official said there was no evidence to support the claims as all “UFO files before 1967 were destroyed after five years” due to insufficient public interest. This was supported by a Cabinet Office official.

While there was documents supporting the events, historians last night believed it more than likely occurred.

They said that Churchill had a known interest with UFOs, even asking for a report in 1952 on “flying saucers” and what it “amounted to”.

Dr David Clarke, author of The UFO files and Senior Lecturer in Journalism at Sheffield Hallam University, said the “fascinating” files showed the level of concern about such “bizarre incidents” during the war.

“It does tie in with what we already know as you have to remember that this was also long before the phrase UFO was created,” he said.

“I suspect there is an element of truth to the statement.”
